What's Next for Dyrk?

Hello everyone!

I've been asked a lot lately, “Will there be more stories in the world of Paternus?” and “What are you writing next?”

I’m here to answer both.

First – absolutely! I plan to write a series of 4 to 6 shorter novels that take place approximately 20 years before the Paternus Trilogy begins. These will be more straightforward Urban Fantasy in the wizardly demon/monster hunter vein, with a whole lot of action.

I then want to do another trilogy that takes place about 14 or 15 years after the Paternus Trilogy ends.

But ...

Before those are written, and to answer the second question, I've signed on with Wraithmarked Creative to write an epic progression fantasy trilogy with the fabulous David Estes, author of the incredibly successful Fatemarked series. The working title is Kraken Rider Z. We're still working on the blurb, but it goes something like this –

If there's one thing dragons fear, it's a kraken.

Even lowly hull-scrubber Zee Tarrow knows that. Like everyone on the island Kingdom of Tosh, he was frightened by fables of krakens as a child. It seems an odd thing to press upon the children of the realm, because – luckily for the dragons and their riders – no one has seen a kraken in a thousand years.

Then again, Tosh is a society that lives off the sea, that exists only at the will of the ocean. Royal Dragon Knights guard the king's ships and vessels, defending them from the constant threat of pirates, hostile empires, and beasts of the sea. It makes sense that the people would fear krakens, even after generations of Knights graduate and take flight from the ramparts of Triumf’s Citadel, an elite academy exclusive to the rich and well-connected.

A school Zee, who has barely ever had more than two copper pennies to rub together, has no chance of getting into.

... Or does he?

Zee has a secret. A decade-old secret, unknown to anyone but himself. He has not only seen a kraken – he saved its life. When that truth gets out, will Zee be hunted by the Dragon Knights he has always envied and admired, or will he be given a chance to become the first Kraken Rider in history...?

I'm super excited about this project. My main goal is to make it fast, exciting, and fun. Writing is already underway, and I'm having a hell of a great time with the story.

The plan is for the first book to be released in 2023, then the second and third in 2024 and 2025.

Paternus: War of Gods Release Date Change

Hi everyone! I hope you are all having wonderful holidays.

It's with mixed feelings and only after much deliberation that I've decided to push the release of Paternus: War of Gods back by five weeks, from May 19 to June 23.

The reason for this change is that the manuscript just isn't ready to submit to beta readers, which is the next major step before some rewriting and delivery to editors and proofers. At more than 50,000 words longer than book two, the sheer magnitude of finishing it and cleaning it up has proven more than I can handle in the time I had allotted.

That’s the bad part of the news. The good part is I’ll now have time to make the book what I really want it to be and that I think you, the readers, deserve.

Thank you for your patience, sorry for any inconvenience, and Happy New Year!

All the best,

Dyrk

Let slip the gods of war… just a little later than we’d thought…

Announcing a Kickstarter for Rise of Gods Hardbacks!

On Tuesday, October 29, I will be launching a Kickstarter for hardbacks of Paternus: Rise of Gods, Book 1 of The Paternus Trilogy!

A whole lot of folks have asked me about hardbacks for Paternus, and author friends have been pushing me to do a Kickstarter for ages, so here it is! If this Kickstarter goes well, I'll be doing this for all the books in the trilogy.

Why Kickstarter? Production and printing of good quality hardbacks is expensive, and print-on-demand services like Ingram just don't provide the quality I'm looking for. This way, the costs are covered and we get really classy books - it's a win-win for everybody.

These will be cloth bound, foil stamped, with slipcovers, using the original paperback artwork with a few changes. I'm most excited, though, by the possibility of including a piece of interior art by the amazing Ed Binkley. Ed is world renowned for his fantasy illustration, one of my very favorite artists, and I got to meet and chat with him at DragonCon this year. Not only is he extremely talented, he's also a very friendly guy. You can check out Ed's amazing work at edbinkley.com.

Depending on the level of funding, we'll have a b&w sketch, a finished b&w drawing, or (fingers crossed) a complete finished color piece. And the character we've chosen is none other than The Prathamaja Nandana herself.

The hardcovers aren't the only cool items that will be available. Other levels and bonuses include:

  • Receive a Paternus: War of Gods eBook one month prior to release

  • Rise of Gods posters

  • Signed Rise of Gods paperbacks

  • Official, signed ARC paperbacks of War of Gods, received by release date

  • Rare and out of print original-cover paperbacks of Paternus from before it was even called Rise of Gods (quantities extremely limited)

  • and more!

I'll announce this again when the Kickstarter launches. I hope you're all as excited about it as I am :D
